It started as a school assignment... a class to teach business and interpersonal skills... for a homeschooling family in Palmer, Alaska. Before long, it had taken on a life of its own. The Cook family... Mark, Amy, Magnolia, and Willow... now oversee operation of The Recycled Jeans Company in partnership with a talented team of fabric artists and small business owners all across America.
President and fabric artist Amy Cook said, "When it became apparent this was going to be a viable business, we had four goals in addition to our learning objectives:
The family assessed their skills, resources, and personal interests, and this is what they came up with as the best business for their family. Fabric artist and marketing director Magnolia Cook is also a budding actress, heavily involved with her local theatre. When asked what her favorite role has been, she is quick to reply, "Gladys Herdman in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever."
The youngest Cook, Willow, only five years old when the company was conceived, was immediately dubbed CEO because of her take-charge (one might even say "bossy") attitude. In between learning to ride her bike and playing with her dolls, Willow hangs out in the studio giving advice (making demands? issuing decrees?).
Mama Amy has been sewing since the age of 10 (a very long time ago indeed) and finds immense satisfaction in seeing her creations enjoyed by so many others. As president, Amy is kept plenty busy by the administrative end of the business, but still makes time to practice her craft, particularly in the design of new products.
Also an invaluable member of the team, Mark participates in all brainstorming sessions and is the author of many key business practices RJC follows today. Although he has a "day job" serving in the U.S. Army JAG Corps, he fills in where he happens to be needed at the moment. "We absolutely couldn't function without him," claims Magnolia. "He's the glue that holds us all together.
